Higher Ground

A Typical Day

Higher Ground has a full program designed to address clients’ health, mental and emotional health, and spiritual wellbeing. We help re-establish healthy relationships with family and friends and support clients in our Maori cultural program.
6.00am Wake up
7.00am Morning walk
7.30am Breakfast
8.00am Work Duties – Cleaning house
8.30am Steps – Daily reading and sharing in small groups
9.00am House meeting. Outline program for day. Clients give feedback to other clients around behavior over the previous day.
10.30am Break
11.00am Maori Cultural Group. Clients learn Te Reo, Kapa Haka and Wairua. Powhiri for new residents.
12.00pm Lunch
1.00pm Education Group. Themes include relapse prevention, transactional analysis, smoking cessation and anger management.
2.00pm Break
2.30pm Sports group – volleyball, baseball, soccer, yoga, zumba, and Tai Chi
4.00pm EMOG – every member of group – clients share their history of why they have come to Higher Ground
5.00pm Free time – reading, table tennis, chess, cards
6.00pm Dinner
7.00pm Leave for AA and NA meetings
9.00pm Inventories – daily diary
10.00pm Bed time
10.30pm Lights Out

There are variations on a day-to-day basis but this gives a fair idea of the components in each day. Clients are also given written assignments or “commitments” to do, and will have opportunity to present this in a group.

On Wednesday Family Education Group and Multiple Family Groups are held from 7pm (link to that page)

Weekends have more free time, with shopping on Saturday afternoon and visitors on Sunday afternoon.
